As I understand it, the main advantage of a cutter or a yawl/ketch/schooner, over a sloop, is just the variety of ways you can set your sails? is this correct?

Can someone toss me some information on some more specific advantages and disadvantages?

Also: Why would someone go with a yawl over a ketch, when it apears to have all the complexity, but less sail area for a jigger as opposed to a mizzen.
