Your grandfather was obviously a clever man. He built an unusual boat for its time, with many innovative features, and built it well enough to survive a serious grounding during a hurricane. And some might say pretty, too.

But the claim of 60 mph is, frankly, fantastic. From the waterline down, Moby Dick appears to be a fairly conventional displacement hull with a LWL of 37 feet, limiting her top speed to somewhere in the 8-10 knot range. All the streamlining above the waterline will help her get to those speeds more quickly in light air, but will not increase her top speed.
