The SH radio I have (listed in my post above) is this:
Waterproof: Front panel meets JIS-7 / IPX7,
submersible 3' for 30 minutes
I guess that makes it waterproof. Since it's inside the boat, it doesn't matter that much.

I can't find the specs for the remote mic, but it's probably the same or better.

For cost, Defender has the radio at $159 and the remote mid for $91, or $250 plus shipping for both.

I didn't go with Icom because the radios I looked at didn't display GPS data. Not a big deal, but the SH did, and for less money. I didn't get Uniden because, in my experience with Uniden products, the audio quality is poor.

IMHO, audio quality is just about the most important 'feature' a radio can have. They all have just about the same specs and features. But if you can't understand what someone is saying because the audio is garbled or low, or otherwise not clear, the radio isn't very helpful.
