A couple of additional points. You should use a low stretch line, not standard double braid dacron. A low stretch dacron line (like XLS Extra) is OK for cruisers, but a dyneema or technora core line (like Warpspeed or Ultra-Tech) is a better choice. Yes, you can replace the halyards with the mast up using a light "messenger" line and pulling it through. You can order the new halyard with a "reeving eye" for attaching the messenger if you wish.
