Yeah, it can really surprise you when you get out past a point or harbor and the fetch increases... one of my first sails on my boat two years ago was in 35 knots of wind and it wasn't so bad, at least until I got out past the second point...then the fetch was from somewhere down in New Jersey, and the waves went from 3-5' up to about 9-12'. Did that for about 45 minutes and decided that I had had enough fun for the day...and headed back in.
