Alex, I think your approach is pretty reasonable. Fred is going to hear about it sometime. There's no point in dealing with it until you need to.
Just don't bring it home.
If it's there, he's going to be interested in it and he's going to be asking questions about it. And you're going to have to answer them. If you don't, he will get answers without you. That's what you don't want.
I think that this is your goal; to have the kind of relationship with your son where he wants to get your answers to the hard questions of life.
Where he understands that you want to help him avoid all the things that you had to learn the hard way.
You and your wife are the only people in the world who know when Fred should be allowed to experience something as controversial as GTA.
It's pretty obvious how much you care.
