With the exception of 500 billion for oil and china drilling, please show me where you have gotten the facts for the rest of that. I am not being a smarty, I am being serious. All of my research, even including the pro-drill sites and oil company sites, say something COMPLETELY different from you. Obviously I am missing something.
CD...note that I said OIL and COAL OIL...as in oil made from coal which is now economically sensible. I think you are just looking at proven OIL reserves in your critique of my remarks.
And has it occured to you that maybe the market is forcing alternatives right now?
GREAT...that is what the market is supposed to do. Now explain again why we ought to let it work for alternatives that are NOT proven yet and NOT let the market work for the resource that provides 85% of our energy today...which only serves t distort the marketplace.
I read yesterday about Saudia Arabia immediately turning on every spigot. They are about the only ones that can do it. Remember how the market reacted yesterday? Oil went UP (though it finally ended down some). Why? Because of the grim reality: they can add 1-2 million barrells/day. That will add .2% to the current demand - that is two-tenths of a percent.
Ouch.
Drilling now will take 15 years.
Right...and China and India will suck up anything that can be pumped continuously placing upward price pressure on oil...and increasing our dependency on foreign sources and devaluing the dollar.
Then you complain about the TIME it takes to get ANWAR on line...when folks like you have BLOCKED it for 15 years. That is NUTTY! It doesn't MATTER how long it takes to get it. It will be worth MORE by then and it is OURS not someone else's and we will still NEED it...as well as every bit of other oil we can take from offshore, under the poles and anywhere else where it can be done with minimal environmental impact.
We run through 7.6 billion barrells/year in the US. We have somewhere around 20 billion barrels recoverable (including ANWR and Balken and Texas). Guess you are not planning on living very long?? And as I have said before, it takes 15 years to get it. You run out of it 15 years after that (assuming you can even get 5% out of it/year).
READ my comments on coal oil conversion. We have the OIL equivilent of over 1000 billion (i.e. 1 TRILLION) barrels of oil in our proven coal reserves...certainly enough to sustain us when combined with our oil reserves until such time as nuclear and other technologies can FULLY take up the slack. BTW...coal liquification is profitable with oil prices of $35 per barrel.

ANWR only has enough to supply a bit over one year of US current use. That is assuming you could drain it dry overnight (impossible).
Balkken is less than ANWR.
Texas is less than Balkken.
I am serious. I don't care if it is the Exxon web page or Dick Cheney's personal blog... please show me where you are getting these facts from that contradict everything I have researched?
See above and remember we are also calling for offshore oil drilling... not just Anwar and Bakken and Texas... No reliable estimates exist for what we may find there (the 86 billion above is based on what we know & estimate based on that... and that is constantly growing as we know more...see Brazil's recent discovery) but one would expect THOSE reserves to greatly exceed whatever we have left on land. The point is that we need TIME and every drop & bit of our own oil and coal buys us some AND contributes to the vale of our currency and decreases the wealth of our enemies.
You ask for data...and I have provided some. I also know that there is NOTHING that can presently replace 85% of our energy use except nuclear and those plants take 20 years too. DRILL AND NUKE!
