I sailed a bit out in California back in college, out of San Diego since I was visiting friends at UCSD. We did do a few trips in a C&C and a couple of other boats, not as far as south as Cabo, but down the coast from SD. It can get pretty nasty pretty quickly, and IMHO, I just don't see taking my family out on a Catalina 30 in that area. Doing something like that as a young adult, with few responsibilities, is one thing...taking wife and children is another. YMMV.
Just because other people have done it...doesn't mean that it is a good idea to do it. Webb Chiles has sailed most of the way around the world in a Drascombe Lugger... Is it possible... obviously. Is it a good idea... I don't think so. He is an incredible sailor and a pretty neat person, but I wouldn't take a Drascombe Lugger offshore like he did.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
