advice on buying a cruising boat

My wife and I are finally getting serious about looking for a cruising boat. we have been surfing yachtworld and with all the models it is easy to get confused,(cutter or sloop, full keel or bulb, center cockpit or aft). as most of our cruising will be down the intercoastal,Bahama''s and florida Keys I kmow we want a max draft of 5''. we are currently looking at a 1990 Endeavour 42 and an 1987 Island Packet 38. having not sailed either boat could we get some input on their cherecterstics. with the full keel I would assume the Packet would point a little higher and track straighter but which would be faster, but then again never sailed a cutter rig. I know both offer abundant tankage and storage. does anyone know of any flaws in either model. There are a lot of Catalina''s up here on the great lakes, what do you guy''s think of these as live aboards?
Thanks for any information you can offer.
