Wombat, the biggest problem with the cigarette lighter plugs is that the design is so open to interpretation, that there are a lot of poorly made cheap parts on the market. The cheap stuff works miserably, the good stuff works quite reliably. It can take a while to learn to spot the differences: Better plating, heavier wires, dual spring clips not just one, spring loaded tip, price higher than a buck apiece.
They're easily replaced and wired up though, so if you find a good source, pick up a couple of extras and replace any junk you've got. In the US, for better or worse, they're the 12v standard connection.
