Heck, you don't even need a $300 plotter -- a simple $100 Handheld GPS and some sense would have prevented it.
Instead of "some sense" I'd say "a good paper chart and the ability to plot your position". The problem with an inexpensive handheld GPS is that you really can't rely on them to show you where not to go; there is not enough chart information. The same can hold true for expensive plotters; I know of at least one reef that my Raymarine RL series plotter does not do justice to.
No need for a pre-survey haulout eh Halekai!?!
Sea-Trial might be a bit difficult tho!
