I never go out in conditions that are dangerous, and the river is always pretty calm even on relatively windy days, and there aren't many of those. if I'm solo, I'll usually put on the PFD if it's blowing 15+ --- once I have to reef the main, I consider the PFD, and I'll often put it on when I go forward to rig my docking line while I'm under power on autopilot for a few seconds... lots of powerboat wakes to deal with at times, as you know around here/there; I'll also often wear it while docking just in case I slip and fall in.
