hello people , mind if i join you ?

i was just looking around for a boat & see what people are talking about these days & ended up joining ....looks like a great site & i could certainly do with some advice.

i am from inland england & didnt grow up around sailing , been traveling since i left home & was introduced to sailing late teens , lived on a gaf rigged cutter for nearly a year as we sailed the coast of france & med , classic yacht events & races in Auz & south africa with different boats , whilst looking to join a cape to rio ,met a delivery crew about to take a 38 cat from cape town to baha mexico , i got off in mexico ,thumbed it to the states & that was the last time i sailed 2002, been in deserts since ...turns out this is where the money is ,now i am looking for my own home ..was thinking a 40 ft ? .....this is where i need your knowledge.

is it possible to get a good 40 ft cruiser for around the 20,000 usd mark ?

something that can handle the pacific

what should i avoid (apart from the urge to buy the first one i set my eye on )

any good tips or storys of your first boat would be great

thanks for reading , i look forward to hearing from you
