Leave the charger off if you aren't gonna check the water levels once a month. Charge the batteries once every couple of months fully and check the water.
You don't say if it is a 3 stage charger which is the ONLY type that should be used but even these will eventually evaporate and uncover the plates destroying the batteries.
Wet Batteries will self discharge so DO need to be charged every now and then. For EXTENDED non-use with no charging required...AGM type batteries are about 10x better despite the added cost. This may be what your dockmates should choose next!
