Boat Prep for Passagemaking

Andrew Burton's article reminds us of the importance of making lists. With all the thoughts swimming through our heads before an ocean passage it is only human to overlook key factors to sailing safe. On my seven year solo voyage around the world, and with 30 years experience, I am embarrassed to say I still forgot things to check or bring.

I like Mr. Burton's idea of categorizing the MOST important to check out first. In his "Category One," however, I would also add "ground tackle and windlass" as well as "reefing and all reefing lines."

I'm sure, with more thought, Andrew, myself and other experienced sailors can add more "must do things" to Category One.

As he writes, though, making lists is the key. Sometimes simply forgetting to bring along spare flash light batteries becomes the catalyst that leads to disaster.
