Here's something else you might try. I used this on the acrylic headlights on my car which were badly pitted and it worked wonders.

Go to the Automotive section of your local Wal Mart and look for a pouch of "Headlight Restorer". The kit comes with fine (and very fine) wet sand paper, a polish, polishing cloth, and a sealant. 1 pouch was enough to do both headlights on my 2000 Mitsu eclipse.
