Hello from a long time reader
I have been reading this site ever since some friends visited last summer and showed us their sailing pictures and video. It had always been a dream to have a sailboat, but until their visit, I never realized that a good old sailboat could be within our reach financially.
After lots of research and looking, we (my wife especially) fell for a 1971 31' Seafarer Yawl . Beautiful lines..we love the traditional looks and overhangs. I also love the yawl rig, although I wish there was a bit more written on yawl rig sail trim.
We purchased the boat after a survey and sea trial (Jan 7th on the Severn River with the temps in the 70's. Awesome) The survey was very good, a long list of very doable things, which I have worked off a few things each time I visit the boat. There are so many wonderful things that have come out of this experience. Quality time with my wife, who has also fallen in love with sailing. Quality time with our adult kids and grandkids (we have a big family, and they have also gotten very excited about the decision). Learning about sailing - taking ASA 101, reading everything I can find, reading this board every day, practicing, and becoming a DIY boatowner. I am hoping that when we have more time to do longer sails, that meeting other sailors and developing friendships will make it all the better an experience.
The "Bonita", (named after my wife, but it also means "beautiful" which we think it is) is located off Rock Creek at Fairview Marina. I am looking forward to a few more sails this fall before we pull it out. (Got more work to do, as always). Also looking forward to the Sailboat show again in a few weeks.
I hope to be able to help some of the newbies like reading this site has helped me.
