We insist that Rendezvous attendees NOT use the Sheraton Marina shower and laundry facilities, if you are not staying in the Marina . Also, if you are dinghying garbage ashore, and find the cans at the Marina filled, bring your garbage to the Famers' Market, where a big dumpster is provided. Do NOT leave bags on the ground next to the Marina garbage cans! They quickly get torn apart and scattered by animals, creating a mess to clean up!

The Sheraton Marina has been kind in providing their dinghy dock, and grounds, for our use during the Rendezvous. Please, show them that we all appreciate their welcome and sponsorship.

Bayfield 36. Nice looking boat, has a few issues like all boats but it's well outfitted and has been maintained pretty well. Survey next week. Plan to head south, Bahamas, Carib. etc. They were originally looking at Morgan 38's, but liked the interior layout of the Bayfield better. Completely different boats, I think they fell in love with the traditional looks of the Bayfield.

Dick Giddings who is both a friend and the guy who has pulled this together for so many years now as a non-profit venture is ready to give up all the work involved and all the time and no one has stepped forward to continue it. Maybe something will happen before next year but if not, Dick is bowing out.
Dick is also one of the "mods" on the Cruiseheimers net and has given much to his fellow cruisers over the years. Thanks Dick for all you have done and continue to do!!

Thanks

Thank you Mr. Moderator, for the kind words. Judy and I have been building, for the same four years that we have been sponsoring this Rendezvous. One definitely interferes with the other... We had thought any number of people, or groups around New Bern would jump at this opportunity to promote the area, bringing cruisers up the Neuse for a few days of seminars, services and PARTIES. But everyone we suggested that they take over the Rendezvous told us "you set the bar too high". Well hell, our bar is at elbow height (probably not for YOU, Mr. Moderator!), just like everybody else's, and even Little Judy can get served!!! Anyway, with all seriousness aside, this effort does take about 2 months out of every year, and doesn't put anything back. So, it's an enterprise that only boaters dedicated to other boaters would be interested in.

I am on the Cruiseheimers' Net every morning, and host the Do-Dah Net at 1700 on 8152.0, which is for boats on passage, to post their positions, and also check to see if I have any messages "from home" for them. Do-Dah is very formal, for the first few minutes, until all passages are polled, and then it's just a meeting place and chit-chat.

NOW, we have the house all closed in, and the siding on, and after the Rendezvous we will attack all the little stuff inside, like finishing the soffit over the kitchen cabinets, putting up cove and mop board mouldings, etc. Anybody that's good on step ladders is welcome to come visit!!! Sea you later...

I don't know where this now stands, as far as someone picking up the gauntlet from Dave and Judy, but I would like to at least suggest that some other port of call be considered for future Southbound Cruisers Rendezvous. I used to like to include New Bern on my Southbound journeys (not neccessarily with the rendezvous), but over the past couple of years the town, and in particular, The Sheraton, seems to be becoming progressively more hostile to cruisers. There are certainly exceptions, the people at Mitchell Hardware always seem to be helpful, for example, but overall, the experience in New Bern seems to be less pleasant than it was in the past. The Sheraton definitely treats cruisers as red headed step children these days. They only want hotel guests at $200./night, or people who plan to buy a $500K condo.

Update on New Bern Rendezvous....

For those who have been wondering, it begins to appear that nobody is going to pick up the New Bern Southbound Cruisers' Rendezvous. We had talked to three couples from the area who were somewhat interested, but the lead couple has bowed out, due to health and family situations. And we are not hearing from anyone else.

So, since the time rapidly approaches when you would have to get on the city's calendar, and reserve the Farmers' Market, and start making plans......we will wait a couple of weeks, and post a notice on our website that we are "Out of Business".

It was a fun four years, here in New Bern, and we will miss the camaraderie and meeting new cruisers. But, the time has come to move on, while we can still move! Hope to see a lot of you around. We're still running two SSB Nets; Cruiseheimers' Net at 0830 on 6227 for the winter, and 8152 for the summer, and the Doo-Dah Net on 8152 at 1700 daily for people on passage to report positions, and also to make contact. Come and see us.....
Best regards, fair winds, and cheap diesel!
