When I spoke to the folks at max-prop the first time, they instructed me to set the prop pitch to the point where it would stall the motor about 200 RPM less than max for the motor.
I have a Perkins 4-108 new style with a max rpm at 3600 rpm..after pitching 3 different times, we got it to the point where the motor would rev no higher than 3400 rpm..
It works great in forward and reverse............
If you can get a manual, it goes into detail on how to align the markings for the right pitch...
Its best to do it out of the water, as dropping something is a drag while under the boat, but it has been done.. I once spoke to someone that had changed his pitch in the water by backing the boat up to the shallows and putting down a white sheet under the back in case he dropped something.
