I started crewing when low-aspect mains and non-lapping headsails were the norm, and still consider the disappearance of
jib clubs to be the seminal event in the popularization of small sailing craft. To this day, I consider tacking a 150% genny in a small gale is a pleasure compared to first getting the club to set right, and then avoid being swatted overboard by it.
