The media did not put Joe the Plunger under a microscope because he asked Obama a question; they put him under the microscope after McCain made him the focal point of the debate. Anything that happened to Joe is on John McCain's head (McCain has since apologized to him). John McCain didn't bother to fact check; it's only in Joe's fantasy world that he makes $250k a year and therefore would have his taxes (which he apparently doesn't bother to pay anyway) increased.
If Americans were logical, after the experience of Joe the Plunger, they should be properly fearful of McCain using them as a campaign prop, not of asking Obama questions.
If you can't see the irony of someone who doesn't pay their taxes complaining about a tax increase, especially since they would receive a tax cut unders Obama's plan, you have no sense of humor.
