Plumbing requires pipes souljour. Making pipes requires smokestacks of one sort or the other, even if they are only kilns. Idyllic harmony with nature is a nice vision, but it will never be an actual reality.
While mankind certainly has the ability to "pollute" less, as with any issue of livability, there is the commensurate trade off between differing goals. And while there has been no lack of "research" in regards to pollution, it has been mostly non-existent on the other side of the coin.
No one wants to pollute, or contribute to changes in the natural way of things. To posit otherwise, is hyperbole of the worst sort. What should be studied more thoroughly, is where the balance lies between the two goals. Blithely spouting pollution is bad, accomplishes nothing.
