Gord, I understood the question to be about diesel fuel because of the ''offshore'' context...but I didn''t ask.
Gas can be stored in a vented-overboard locker, in case we need to say that, but not in any space that only vents into the hull of the boat: leak -> vapors + spark = Boom!
FWIW I''ve seen some boats that enjoy multiple, small cockpit (older boats) or swim platform (newer boats) lockers which are ideal candidates to be used for gasoline storage by converting them to vent out thru the hull or transom. I dearly wish that option were open to me, altho'' I''d begrudge losing that storage space for other uses. Two small, canvas-covered gas cans are the only thing stored on WHOOSH''s deck, and even that seems to be too much on occasion!
