Balmar Alternator Eating Belts

hi Steve

I did replace my old 45 A stock alternator in a MD22 volvo with a 110 A BAlmar. This is a common problem that everyone switching to heavier alternators will face, disregarding the engine brand.

First belt lasted 2 hours. Unfortunately very far away from anywhere were I can purchase any kind of belt. I replaced with the spare one, and stop using the motor during a complete week of holidays. Fortunately I had 4 solar panels, and a 3500W generator.

After arriving, I check the web before calling anybody, and found quite a bit of advice.

What I did, went up one size in the belt, and slightly reduced the usual tension (Perhaps I used to adjust it too much). I did not change any pulley yet. Most of my friends using Yanmar who also went to the Balmar 80, already changed pulleys.

You can also start checking the the following:

This discussion seems to be e never ending one, but raise good questions.
