Cat Island Channel

This is a question for those familiar with the extreme western part of the Mississippi Sound. Most cruising boats that cross the Gulf of Mexico bound for New Orleans use the Mississipi River Gulf Outlet(MRGO) to avoid fighting the current and ship traffic on the Mississippi River. The MRGO is going to be closed to prevent hurricane surge waters from reflooding New Orleans.

Looking at the charts, it seems that the best alternative is the Cat Island Channel, just southwest of Cat Island. It appears to have plenty of depth and is well buoyed. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of the Cat Island Channel?

I'm familiar with Ship Island Pass to the east, but it looks as if you can save 20-30 miles by using the Cat Island Channel, if you're headed to New Orleans.
