I installed the 4000 in 2002. After a year went by I got curious about interfacing with the old
GPS (installed below decks), so I temporarily wired my
Garmin 183 to the 4000. It worked! So, I hard-wired the units and now the 4000 displays ground speed as well as follows a defined route.
