Hey Aussies & Kiwi's...I know you guys have a pretty heavy upside-down global warming community there and a lot of attention focused on the Great Barrier Reef. So this post is about the GBR and warming.
First though, I am not going to say that the GBR is not in trouble... it may very well be in trouble...but it is not in trouble from global warming.
Here's the newly composed 27 year sea surface temperature record from the GBR published from newly compiled data from NASA. The data is matched to grid cells of 1 degree Latitude and 1 degree longitude and from it the author Aussie John McClean extracted the data applying to the GBR Marine Park and calculated the average across the park for each month. His full article appears here
Great Barrier Reef Sea Temperature and is recapped on Jennifer Marohasy's Environmental Blog today
here. Despite her Aussie focus, I read her blog daily and commend her to you for her take on a wide variety of environmental issues.
Bottom line...despite what you have been fed by the media ...there has been NO incrase in sea temperature on the waters of the Great Barrier Reef in the 27 years of recorded data. Here's the graph...
Note the El Nino year of 1998 well reflected. So...if the GBR is threatened...it ain't by temperature. Look to real pollution for answers or perhaps a closer look at the claimed evidence is in order.
G'day!
