Oops, forgot the original question I was responding to. We used rail-mounted clamp-on rod holders similar to this:



Works well and holds the rod aft of the rail and clear of any rigging; can be set up on a vertical or horizontal portion of the rail. A safety line attached to the rod is recommended for obvious reasons, but I haven't had any of our rods come out of the holder, even when the fish hit.
