Correct use of dielectric grease?

Dielectric grease is non-conductive, so I am not sure how best to use it to protect electrical connections. Putting a thin film on connections might not add significant resistance to the connection when the connectors press together, but still allow the grease to inhibit corrosion. Is that the concept?
