Lostappilation, Welcome to the forum. My mother taught at ASU and we've spent a lot of time in that beautiful area. It's a long beat to windward from the US southeast coast to the Virgin Islands and actually a much more pleasant return trip. I would suggest that you consider gaining experience before you leave, but purchasing the boat in the Virgin Islands. Many people have taken boats to "paradise" and end their cruising times there. The market is good for a buyer in such places and the islands there would offer a much more pleasant learning environment than the sail east against the prevailing winds.
