Help! looking for the right RYA certification program
Hi everyone, I'm new to posting here so please don't flame me if there have been threads about this before. I've done some extensive searching and haven't found much though.
So I'm a recent college dropout, and my girlfriend and I are looking into getting certified to work on bareboat charters for a while. We are both approaching this with the intent of doing serious work aboard yachts on a somewhat permanent basis, and we want the best bang for our buck/experience/program for getting certified for this sort of thing. After doing some research we really like what the RYA certification has to offer, although we are having a rough time finding the right program.
Ideally we want a several week long-several month long live aboard that covers extensive coursework and multiple certifications, not simple a week here and there doing each class and slumming it in between. We are prepared some spend some money on it, but obviously the cheaper the better since we don't have a whole lot. We are also very open to going abroad for this course work.
Our goals are to become certified professional sailors that could work in many different environments in the chartering world, whether bareboat chartering, basic crew work, or captaining our own vessel somewhere down the road.
So please, does ANYBODY know of a good school out there that has an extensive live aboard program with multiple certifications available? Also, is the RYA the best certification to use for this sort of work? I know there is also the ASA and basic USCG licensing too, but I'm not sure if they would fit the bill for us.
Any advice you guys could give would be amazing.
