Yep, it would so cool to have a dictator, wouldn't it?
That way, a president would not have to take REALITY (what the Congress might pass) into account.
That's part of his intelligence. What you consider flip-flops is actually something we call flexibility, or in other words:

What part of that don't you get?
When it comes to health care, the current solutions are all band-aids. Without massive cost reductions it really is only shifting the deck chairs around. At the same time, the first step is to make certain everyone is covered. It is also bad for the economy for the work force to stay with a certain employer just because they have health care. It would be better to be a portable system, which could move from employer to employer...or even self-employment.
No doubt I think single payer would be the best...and we will probably eventually get there (maybe not in my lifetime), but unless one is King there is not much we can do. The corporate powers who own our Congress simply will not accept their profits being whittled down too much (in the case of heath care).
