Time for a little deconstruction boys and girls. Since craig is constantly reminding us what a necessary and wise thing CAFE is, it seems like it's worth taking a closer look at it's results.
Have ever increasing CAFE standards lowered gasoline consumption, or the importation of oil? Well, in a word, no. In fact, instead of lowering them, they have increased. Which, that being the reason for their implementation, brings us right up against those 'ol pesky unintended consequences. Something there seems no lack of, with this "wise" piece of legislation.
Things like lighter, smaller vehicles that are inherently less safe for the occupants.
Things like increased costs in vehicle production (meeting the latest increase is estimated at $1300 per vehicle), which translate into higher prices, which in turn results in less demand. And we've seen where that leads.
Thus, one questions, at a time when tax dollars are flowing into the auto companies like a flash flood, why, the standards were raised, instead of eliminated. After all, the President vowed to get rid of the things that don't work, and all the data shows, CAFE doesn't accomplish it's purpose.
