It seems this thread has gotten into surveys. I don't think a survey is a bad thing it is really a good thing. When I first started thinking about buying my first boat many years ago I do what I always do I read a couple of books on the subject and I realized that surveying a boat was the most important thing you can do to protect yourself. It became apparent that I could not afford to pay a surveyor to look at every boat I was interested in so how did I solve that problem, I read a couple of books on surveying boats. I soon understood what was considered good construction methods, how bulkheads should be installed and other details. You shouldn't necessary act as your own surveyor but you should know enough to reconize when one is BSing you. The knowledge you gain by reading about proper construction will give you more confidence when you are away from the dock, you will know everything is as it should be.
