I think every Navy in the world would disagree with you on that one.
USN ships (as well as those of other countries) suffer bimetallic corrosion, which is what I suspect you observed. The point where the aluminum superstructure met the steel deck developed what the shipyard called "mouse holes" if corrosion wasn't countered promptly with preservation and painting.
