Lots of good info about drogues and parachutes, but I'm still not a convinced fan of either. From my first monster storm, in the Atlantic off the East Coast making for Bermuda in the late summer of 1960, aboard my dad's, then-new, Hinckley B40, to Paloma's two storms in the Gulf in more recent years, we never used either and always choose to run before the storm. There may come a storm that we decide to deploy the parachute that we carry aboard Paloma, but, in a big and dangerous storm, what it always comes down to is, what you will end up doing depends on your boat, the ability of the sailors aboard her and their mindset relative to the givens of the storm you're in.
