Sulphated batteries
Drynoc, unless you are planning on some serious cruising, do yourself a favor. Go down to your local WallyWorld and get some new RV/Marine deep-cycle batteries. They''ll last 2-3 years then you buy new ones.
I have had gells, standard lead/acid, no-maintenance, and in my work, used the glassmat batteries. They all fail eventually. I have had customers put in 300-400 dollar batteries and then replace them in 3 years. It is all related to shock loads and charge cycles. If you are not going to be doing extended sailing, why would you need a battery that is rated in the thousands of cycles?
