Strip, clean them and re-assemble, they should be good to go. If you have any broken springs or rounded pawls, replace them. See

I use lamp oil in a large 10 gallon plastic tub as the cleaning agent , you can just dump the dirty parts into the tub, scrub them with a brush, then dry them.
