toqer is on a distinguished road

Hi I'm Robert Cortese. Toqer is my online name I sail a Islander Bahama 24' out of Almar central Basin in Oakland. It's a great slip for a beginner, directly facing the fishing pier (less to hit on your way out)

The boat belongs to my dad. He bought it at a charity auction 4 years ago for $400 with the intention of fixing it up with his best friend, and taking it up the Sacramento Delta. His friend passed away and the boat sat for a year, then he took me out there 2 years ago. I was hooked my first time out.

I taught myself a lot over the last few years. I've learned enough to know whoever gave this boat to charity stripped it of a lot of gear before giving it up. For the first year I sailed without a traveler car, just a rope strung over where the car should be, and a block traveling on that rope.

Suicidally I taught myself to sail in some of the nastiest conditions like that in the bay. Looking back, I was a fool in love.

I don't make much as a karaoke DJ. Add in a mortgage and 2 kids, it's gone fast. Luckily my dad still pays slip fees, and I buy what I can afford for the boat a little at a time.

So far I've; replaced the running rigging, bought an 87 honda BF100, replaced the tiller stock, dock lines, handheld VHF, porta potty, fishfinder, got a danforth anchor, rode, installed new running lights, setup my Ubuntu laptop to run Seafarer, installed a harken captive ball traveller and got a new battery.

My dad, brother and I just completed a trip up to Rio Vista. It was fun. I know without the investment the equipment I've gotten, and the time involved in installing it we never would have made it up there.

I'm stoked I've found this community. I've lurked for a while picking up a tip here or there, and look forward to participating more.
