If you are comfortable with a heavy swell and frequent wakes you can
anchor in Red Hook itself - it would certainly not be my first choice, though. I think you might be able to find someone to rent you a private mooring closer in but it would still be an uncomfortable place to settle down in. I met a couple of younger guys (working in the hospitality industry) who found cheap housing last year, both in Red Hook and over on St. John. Assuing the tourism industry is still depressed you should have no problems finding a place to stay ashore.
