The Unknown and Unloved

Moving up from a trailersailer but with decent big boat experience, I'm looking for something in the 30-33 foot range, something for strictly coastal New England cruising... probably the most ambitious crossing we might consider is across from Maine to Nova Scotia.

We're looking for something that will probably end up being from the 70s or 80s, and to spend no more than $30 - 35K for something sail-ready. Though we're happy to spend less and do cosmetic work... we don't want a project. And don't want a maintenence nightmare like a wooden boat.

Priorities are cruising attributes over performance attributes, we'd like to have four accommodated comfortably, and 6 in a one-or two-night pinch.

So here's the question. We happen to enjoy the unloved and unknown... products that are better than their reputation suggests (we drive Suzukis). What are the 30-33 footers that are good, decent boats for my needs but are unknown and unloved (and lower-priced)? What will give good value for the dollar?

I am aware of Hunters and Catalinas, being (perhaps undeservedly) unloved, but those don't interest me. I want something less mainstream (right now, I'm intrigued by bilge keelers, Westerlys and others).

So what do you think may be worth investigating? I really don't know a Niagara from an Endeavour from a Bristol from a Freedom... I need some help making a short-list.

Thanks
