Jackdale--
I do agree with you that humans have an affect on the earth--especially with global climate; however, most of the public attention focuses on the extreme sides of the issue. The conservatives don't want to admit humans have an impact on the earth and therefore there is no reason to spend monetary resources on something humans don't effect; and the liberals are more concerned about convincing others they are right instead of trying to find systemic changes on how we live that are cost-effective (note here I did not say cheap.)
It is a reflection of the times we live in--people are really very greedy in their own ways. Helk, pissing in the lake from which your draw your drinking water and catch your fish doesn't matter because it costs too much to build and operate the treatment plant; and trying to prove to others that pissing in your lake significantly adds toxins to your water and fish is more important than actually providing people with a safe place to piss somewhere.
We as a society have become so interested in ourselves that we have lost our ability to build a productive and healthy future.
BTW--I happen to agree with alot of what Thomas Friedman wrote in his book about the earth being Hot, Flat and Crowded.
