SSB w/ DSC is the way to go in my opinion. The "one-to-many" communication path of HF SSB is tremendously valuable in my opinion. There may well be someone else available close at hand that you can reach out to in an emergency, and who in fact can help avoid an emergency in a crisis. The "one-to-one" communication of a sat phone just doesn't measure up. YMMV.
