I have a Volvo D2-55 diesel. I agree with whoulihan. You are correct to suspect a difference: Cold, the oil has fully drained to the crank case and could be expected to be a bit higher. In fact the difference between cold and waiting for 5-10 min after shutting down the engine is negligible. From the Operator''s Manual... "Wait a few minutes before checking the oil level to give the oil time to run down to the oil pan."
