Rock, are you sure that pedestal guard bracket raised the throttle? If I recall correctly (somewhat of an if), the plastic housing the bracket goes under is above the throttle. Increased height might not have been a factor, but messing around in that area might. If the problem came right after that work, I'd be looking inside/beneath the compass housing for some new obstruction resulting from that work.
