Denise,

We do Barnegat all the time, but not with large onshore breeze and outgoing tide. The inlet is faitly simple if you realize the Green can in the middle between the rock jetty's is actually a shoal in the middle of the jetties and you have to move very close to the rock jetty on the north side. Imagine a shoal midway through the entrance to a jetty....whew.

The anchorage behind the lighthouse is beautiful and one of the best ones I have ever been to.

Barnegat is dangerous and to be respected for sure and without local knowledge should not be tried except when dead calm (never), but no worse than some of the inlets we went in on the Long Island Sound

As far as staying in Cape May for a few days and going out into the ocean for a sail, thats a great idea. Stay at Utsches and let me know. I have a special relationship with them. Three of my all time favorite restaurants are in Cape May. The Ebbit Room in the Virginia Hotel is a 5 star. 410 Bank Street Asian Fusion) and the restaurant next door Fresco's (Northern Italian/ French) are great.

Dave
