Many have done just that in the Bahamas; it's all a matter of finding a place where you feel comfortable.

A couple from our dock is headed down now on their PSC 34 and plan to leave it at Guana Cay to return to the states; they will be returning south and taking the boat down to the Exumas later. My parents have left boats in both Hopetown and Georgetown at various times.

Maybe someone else can speak more specifically about the costs, but I wouldn't think it'd be too outrageous.
