A pic would help. If they're riveted on they don't sound like they'll be easy to rebed or good long term. 3/8" plexi is a good choice. You'll want to use bolts and drill the holes oversize to avoid stress when the plexi expands. The best sealant is silicone, not from home depot but good marine silicone, the best beind Dow 795 structural. Don't know how hard to find it'll be though. Here's a Sailnet link on a how to.
