Those that do tend to pick their days carefully.
Nothing too windy. Spray is no fun in January.
However, tucked behind a nice dodger, a clear day can be very nice. No thunderstorms, no bugs, no power boat wakes.
The only distance cruising tends to be delivery trips - people sailing with purpose. Overnight can be peaceful, but the nights are long and you will want a good heater. I winterize the potable water system (bottles only) and flush with very weak AF.
