The downwind performance gripe seems to span most brands of wind vane.
As for vanes themselves, can the shape be tweaked with at all for performance in different conditions, or is the standard tall and narrow design generally the best? I was planning on using some marine ply (6mm) to make a couple new vanes--should I make one bigger and one smaller for light and heavy wind? Any particular dimensions for either?
It was a long time ago but my recollection is that a 6mm blade is too heavy. The blade needs to be in balance with the counterweight so that the vane reacts to every windshift. I seems to recall that we used 4mm marine ply to achieve decent response from the Aries.
